MATH ON HOLIDAYS! VIDEO!

Oh that Mrs. Hosie! She actually gave us math homework for over the holidays.

We have been working on adding and subtracting larger numbers over the last month. I don't want the students to forget these processes over the holiday. The homework has five different days of work. I don't want them doing the whole thing at once. Doing one assignment every two days would be ideal but you make it work for you.

Here's a quick video to update you on our last week or so.  Have a good Easter!

We are learning about air and water in science. Ms. Frizzle from the Magic School Bus Series came to our classroom to take us on a tour of a water treatment plant. It was so cool. See the video of our trip.

Fun Activities

This past week we started learning about air and water. We practiced our presentation and speaking skills after sorting pictures about air and water.

Miss Peterson planned a fun activity where we made homemade water filters. Next week we will learn how a water treatment plant works.

We have been reading and comparing different fairy and folk tales this week. It was fun to play an active game incorporating a comprehension review of one of the fairy tales from China. Thanks Miss Daniluk!

Special Guests
We have two pre-interns in our classroom for the next three weeks. Miss Peterson and Miss Daniluk are both in their third year of education at the U. of R.  Both have to teach a one unit that they have planned. Miss Peterson is teaching a science unit on air and water and Miss Daniluk is teaching a L.A. unit on folk and fairy tales.

Here are a couple pictures of the students doing an air and water activity. They were given a large selection of pictures that had to do with air and water. Each group had to sort the pictures into  catagories that they choose. They had to sort, organize and label the groups of pictures.

Money!

One area I've noticed that a lot of the kids could work on is recognizing and counting coins. Forget the pennies I guess- they're on their way out! In grade two we only need to know dimes and nickels. The dimes could be related to the "tens" in bigger numbers up to one hundred. Some students are fine with money but there are a few who really need much more experience with money. Let them pay for small amounts at the store. Teach them to expect change. Have them count the dimes and nickels in your wallet. Don't forget to use the names of the coins. I've noticed that some students can count the coins but don't refer to them by the proper name- they will say 5 tens instead of 5 dimes. Garage sales are the perfect place for kids to learn about money. They can buy some little cheap thing for under a buck and let them count out their own change to pay. I know that letting them pay with a loonie is easier but it doesn't give your child the experience with coins that they need.

Now if only it would warm up and we could actually go to a garage sale!  Have a good weekend!

Lots of Great Readers!

Wow! The kids in this class are getting hooked on reading! Here's another great student with 100 nights of reading.

Today to celebrate the successful completion of our booklets on "big addition" we did some puzzles. As each student finished their booklet they got to choose a puzzle to work on or join a group already working.

Great Job!

Congratulations 20c!

There will be no spelling list this week since it is a short week. So sorry about the poor quality of the calendar letter this month. Someone left colour paper in the photocopier. We print from our computers in our classroom (remotely) and I didn't know it was printing out like that. Then I didn't want to throw out the calendars with the lousy copy because each classroom is on a photocopy budget!

The students had a lot of fun swimming at the Schmirler Leisure Centre. It is also a good opportunity for the students to become independent about taking care of their own clothing etc. in the locker room. We will be doing school swimming lessons in May at the YMCA close by.

We are doing lots of non-fiction reading about beavers. I have booked a classroom presentation as a follow up for our reading.
